How to Do a Proper Pour Over Coffee
Pour over coffee is a method that allows for likely the greatest control over the brewing process. The results are a flavorful and aromatic cup! Follow these steps to master the art of pour over coffee...

What You'll Need
Sacred Grounds organic coffee beans (freshly ground)
A pour over coffee maker (e.g., Hario V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave, etc.)
A paper coffee filter that is appropriate for your brewer
Hot water (about 195°F to 205°F)
Scale measuring grams (optional)
A timer (optional)
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Measure Your Coffee
Start by measuring out your coffee beans. A common, industry wide, ratio is about 1:15, meaning for every gram of coffee, use 15 grams of water. For example, if you use 20 grams of coffee, you’ll need 300 grams of water.
2. Grind the Coffee
Grind your coffee beans to a medium-coarse consistency. The grind size is crucial for proper extraction, so aim for a texture similar to sea/kosher salt.
3. Prepare Your Equipment
Place the paper coffee filter in your pour over maker and rinse it with hot water. This helps eliminate any paper taste and preheats your brewer.
4. Add Coffee Grounds
Place the ground coffee into the filter, ensuring it’s evenly distributed.
5. Start the Brewing Process
Begin by pouring a small amount of hot water (about twice the weight of the coffee) over the grounds to bloom them. This allows gases to escape and enhances flavor. Wait for about 30 seconds.
6. Continue Pouring
After blooming, slowly pour the remaining hot water over the coffee in a circular motion, avoiding the edges of the filter. Pour steadily and aim to finish pouring in about 2:30 - 3 minutes.
7. Let It Drip (draw down)
Allow the coffee to finish dripping through the filter. This may take an additional minute or so.
8. Serve and Enjoy
Once all the water has passed through, remove the filter and enjoy your freshly brewed pour over coffee. Experiment with different coffee beans and brewing times to find your perfect cup!
